Support & FAQ

Answers to the most common questions about ToBaseline on Mac, iPhone, Apple Watch, and across devices.

ToBaseline Free and Pro do not require an account. Your app data stays on your device or, if enabled, in your personal iCloud account.
Questions, ideas, bugs, or feedback are welcome at Contact ToBaseline. I read and reply to these messages myself.

Mac

ToBaseline isn't showing in my Mac menu bar.

If ToBaseline disappears from the menu bar, try these steps in order:

  1. Open System Settings → Control Center. Scroll to Menu Bar Only and confirm that ToBaseline is set to show.
  2. If the menu bar is too crowded, some icons may be hidden. Try holding ⌘ and dragging other icons to make space, then relaunch ToBaseline.
  3. Force-quit the app: open Activity Monitor, search "ToBaseline," select it, and click the × button. Then relaunch from Launchpad or Spotlight.
  4. Restart your Mac. On relaunch, ToBaseline should reappear automatically if it is in your Login Items.
  5. If it still doesn't appear, open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions and confirm ToBaseline is listed under "Open at Login."

On macOS Sonoma and later, System Settings controls menu bar visibility per-app. The Toggle in Control Center settings is the first place to check.

How do I add ToBaseline to Login Items so it opens automatically?

Open System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions and click the + button under "Open at Login." Select ToBaseline from your Applications folder. It will launch automatically on every startup and appear in the menu bar.

My Focus or Pomodoro cycle isn't advancing automatically.

Auto-advance moves you through focus, break, and reset stages without manual input. If your cycle stops between stages:

  1. Open ToBaseline settings and go to Cycle.
  2. Confirm that Auto-advance cycle is turned On.
  3. If it is already on, try toggling it off, waiting a moment, and toggling it back on.

Auto-advance applies to each stage transition. If only one stage is not advancing, check that stage's duration is set to a non-zero value.

Timer & Focus

What is the difference between a session and a cycle?

A session is your full focused work block, the total time you plan to work. A cycle is one repeating unit within that session, typically a focus interval followed by a short break. ToBaseline chains cycles together to fill your session, alternating focused work with brief recovery. At the end of a session you get a longer reset break. This follows best practices of the Pomodoro technique.

Can I customize my focus and break durations?

Yes. Open ToBaseline Settings and select Focus to adjust the duration of your focus interval, short break, long break, and reset window. Yes, this is a free setting.

How do eye break reminders work?

If enabled, ToBaseline gently reminds you to look away from your screen using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Small breaks like this can help reduce eye strain during long stretches of work or study.

iPhone & Dynamic Island

I no longer see ToBaseline in the Dynamic Island.

The Dynamic Island Live Activity requires iOS 16.1 or later and an iPhone 14 Pro or newer. If it has disappeared:

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings → ToBaseline and confirm Live Activities is enabled.
  2. Open Settings → Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) and scroll to Allow Access When Locked. Confirm Live Activities is on.
  3. Start a new session in ToBaseline. The Live Activity appears in the Dynamic Island as soon as a session is running, it does not show when no session is active.
  4. If it still does not appear, force-quit the app on iPhone and relaunch it, then start a session.

Live Activities end automatically when your session ends. The Dynamic Island display is controlled by iOS, so if notifications are restricted system-wide, Live Activities may also be affected.

For a full overview of how the Dynamic Island works on iPhone, see Apple's Dynamic Island Guide.

Can I control a Mac session from my iPhone or Apple Watch?

Yes, with iCloud sync enabled. When sync is on, the current session state (timer progress, cycle position, and active break) is shared across your Mac, iPhone, and Apple Watch in near real-time. You can pause, resume, or skip a stage from any device.

To enable sync, open ToBaseline settings on any device, go to Sync, and turn on iCloud Sync. Sign in to the same Apple ID on all devices. Sync uses iCloud CloudKit and your data never passes through a ToBaseline server.

Integrations

When Apple Music is connected, I do not see my Apple Music playlist options in Choose Music > Your Library.

This issue is typically caused by a temporary sync interruption between your device and Apple Music. You can reset the connection in ToBaseline:
Navigate to Settings > Integrations > Apple Music. Click Disconnect. Click Connect again to re-authorize the sync.

If your playlists still do not appear after reconnecting, please ensure that ToBaseline has permission to access Media & Apple Music in your Apple device's system settings: Go to Apple Music > Your Name/Profile > Apps with Access to confirm ToBaseline is listed (there may be multiple entries per device).

Why doesn't ToBaseline Integrate with Siri?

Siri setup-free automation for is not currenly realistic and I'll be on the look out for Apple platform improvements.

Sync & Devices

How does cross-device sync work? Syncing isn't working.

ToBaseline uses iCloud CloudKit to sync your settings, custom cycles, and session history across your Mac, iPhone, and Apple Watch. Sync is end-to-end through Apple's infrastructure, no data touches ToBaseline servers, and no account with ToBaseline is required.

What syncs:

  1. Your Focus and custom cycle durations.
  2. Session history and stats.
  3. ???? App settings such as sounds, themes, and notification preferences.

What does not sync: active timer state (that is device-local); use the Live Activity or Watch app to monitor across devices in real time.

Ensure all devices are signed in to the same Apple ID and that iCloud Drive is enabled in System Settings (Mac) or Settings → [your name] → iCloud (iPhone/iPad).

Issues with syncing your Focus session, timer or widget data: Confirm the Optional iCloud sync is enabled on the devices. It may take a moment for iCloud to update across your iPhone and Mac. If the sync isn't happening, try these steps to give iCloud a "push":

  1. Close ToBaseline on all devices.
  2. Open ToBaseline on the primary device that will lead your Focus sessions. Start a Focus session on your primary device.
  3. Open the app on your secondary/following device(s).
  4. Wait a few seconds for the iCloud data to refresh, or try relaunching the app on the secondary device.
  5. The secondary or following device should then correctly display the active timer and widget data from your primary device.

I upgraded to Pro on my iPhone but Mac still shows Free.

Pro is tied to your Apple ID through the App Store. To restore your purchase on another device:

  1. Open ToBaseline on the Mac.
  2. Go to Settings → Pro.
  3. Tap or click Restore Purchases.

This syncs your purchase state from the App Store at no extra charge. Ensure you are signed in to the same Apple ID on both devices.

Does ToBaseline work on Apple Watch standalone (without iPhone)?

Yes. With a cellular or Wi-Fi Apple Watch and a ToBaseline Pro subscription, ToBaseline runs as a fully standalone Watch app. You can start, pause, and end sessions directly from your wrist; no iPhone is needed nearby. Session data syncs to your other devices when a connection is available.

Privacy & Data

Does ToBaseline collect or store my data?

For ToBaseline Free and Pro, we do not require an account, use third-party analytics, or collect your sessions, settings, or history. Your app data stays on your device or, if you enable sync, in your personal iCloud account. We do not have access to it. For details, see the Privacy Policy.

How do I request a refund?

Purchases are processed by Apple and refunds must be requested through Apple directly. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, find your ToBaseline purchase, and request a refund. Apple handles all refund decisions. See the Refund Policy for more detail.
